FAMILY MATTERS
HLM
June 2024 Family Series
Colossians 3:12-14, 3:18-25, 4:1
Put on then, as God's chosen
ones, holy and beloved,
compassionate hearts, kindness,
humility, meekness, and patience,
bearing with one another and, if
one has a complaint against
another, forgiving each other; as
the Lord has forgiven you, so you
also must forgive. And above all
these put on love, which binds
everything together in perfect
harmony.
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love
your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents
in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your
children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in
everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eyeservice, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your
reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid
back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also
have a Master in heaven.
INTRODUCTION:
HLM VALUES #5
The FAMILY
Next to God, we put high value and priority on Family, that’s why
we give great importance to evangelizing and discipling families for the
Lord Jesus Christ. We firmly hold it is God’s will for the husband and
his wife to be as ONE in bringing their family closer to God and serve in
a ministry through the Vision of 12 where God has called them.
“Wisdom is revealed by our children.”
While many believe that only a position of power can influence
society, the Bible teaches that the church focuses on our faith journey
and one’s family for it is one of the most constant and most effective
tools of God in shaping us and the world around us.
Our family matters matter to God because our family matters to
God!
We deal with matters NOT based on what we know but based in
who we are — and who we are is defined closely by our family. Your
family is God’s workshop in shaping you. Matters of marriage, parenting,
choice of work, choice of a life partner, and living your purpose are
carefully and wisely worked out by God using your family.
Together with our entire His Life Family, let’s enter into a series that
focuses on why our Family Matters and every story of success, struggle,
and love that comes along with it.

Week 1
focuses on the Strength of the Family.
Marriage is under attack today.
Marriage is under attack today.
Some do not even believe in marriage
anymore. Some view it as a piece of paper and is simply cultural or a
form of formality. Marriage is more than just weddings and romance.
Marriage is sacred. Marriage is a covenant between man and wife before
God. Our marriage matters to God so our marriages must matter to us.
We must center our marriages unto the LORD but first, we must center
ourselves unto Christ.
Marriage is a joyous lifetime of growing together, becoming more and
more Christlike as both man and wife brave every trial and temptation.
Yet, when Jesus is not the focus of the marriage, wrong decisions, and
unmet expectations create cracks in the Family.
Some key points in Colossians 3:18-19
- The wife allows her husband to be responsible for her, and the
husband is subject to Jesus by loving his wife and placing her well-being
above his own.
- Dynamic in the home is not husband as a patriarch, but in the
husband-wife relationship, Christ is the true Lord.
- God is the one who instituted marriage (Adam-Eve).
For those who are single, putting on Christ daily is the best preparation
for the married era of your life.
Supplementary Texts: Ephesians 5:15-33

Week 2
(Father’s Day)
LG Sunday
Every Generation Matters
Colossians 3:20-21
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Week 2 focuses on the Vision of the Family.
As we need to have a vision for our marriages, it also means we also
need to have a vision for our children.
To father our children well, we need to grow on how Father God is a
father to Jesus and us.
Dads ought to also receive the love of the Father as His beloved children
to be healed, be freed, and be strengthened to represent and raise the
next generation.
May the fathers lead with the wisdom and strength found only in the
LORD as their children follow and obey them.
It is a joy to raise somebody who will honor, praise, and serve God.
The children are under the leadership and supervision of their parents.
Obeying their parents glorifies the LORD and brings honor to the family.
Some key points in Colossians 3:20-21
Children
- you belong to the Lord
- this is the right thing to do
- it’s a command
Q:
What’s the difference between “honor your father and mother” vs
“obey your parents”
Fathers
- Don’t provoke (incite)
- Bring them up with discipline and instruction from the Lord
(Ephesians 6:4)
Supplemental Texts: Ephesians 6:1-4

Week 3
Facility/Ministry Sunday
Your Work Matters
Colossians 3:22-25, 4:1
Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters,
not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of
heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord
and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the
inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the

Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also

Week 3 focuses on the Work of the Family.
Everyone in the Family matters.
We all contribute to the growth and development of our homes and
even impacts the people in our companies and communities. As God
issued work to Adam, so all of us have our roles to play, and your role
matters!
Many merely see work as a means to an end — a way to pay the bills, provide for their family, and some funds for recreation. Is this all there is to work?
Many pray for work but why is it then that after 3 months at work, we
complain to the LORD for the same job that we so prayed for?
Work is ordained by the LORD therefore we have to ask who is it the we
are working for.
Our work must always be attached to purpose and if we are seeking our
purpose in this life, might it be that for this season you can find your
purpose in your work?
As God has placed Adam in the garden to work it, God has also placed
us where we are to represent Him.
Some key points in Colossians 3:22-25, 4:1
Work is God-given
(Gen. 2:15 - work is given before the fall)
Work is a command
(Col. 3:23) - God has called us to a task (1 cor. 7:17)
Work is where our faith is tested
(Luke 12:48)
Work is the same word for “worship” - no such thing as sacred vs. secular.
Supplemental Texts: Ephesians 6:5-9

Week 4
Missions Sunday
Your Family Matters in Missions
Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your
reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Psalm 22:27-31
All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the LORD,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
For kingship belongs to the LORD,
and he rules over the nations.
All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
that he has done it.
Week 4 focuses on the Mission of the Family.
When a family is set to represent Christ together towards one another
and the world around them, they become a source of light and life to
those they influence.
God has every intention of filling the earth with His image-bearers and
one of His most powerful instruments giving a broken and miserable
world hope is the gift of a family whose God is the LORD!
Many perceive that missions and family are distinct from one another.
Yet, we have to understand that God perceives that the family is always
on mission.
If our commitment to the LORD matters as a family, we will find every
reason to serve Him together, beginning with one another, influencing
our neighborhoods, the families of the classmates of our children, our
co-workers for the glory of God!
May we surrender the matters of our Family totally and willingly before
the LORD and may be the core of our homes, in every generation.
